C) Big Movements October 24, 2008

One big movement with the issue of race in the Progressive Era was the NAACP or the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.  This was lead by: W.E.B Dubois, a few main supporters were Ida Wells-Barnett, William Trotter, and many more.  This organization was developed in New York, 1909, after the lynching of two African American men from Springfield, Illinois.  The NAACP grew to become a significant force for civil rights during the mid-twentieth century.  Things that came out of the NAACP where: The Anti-Lynching Bill, which was to assure that people within the jurisdiction of every State had the equal protection of the laws, and to punish the crime of lynching.  Also coming out of the NAACP was the Costigan-Wagner Bill.  Robert F. Wagner and Edward Costigan worked together to create their bill that proposed federal trials for any law enforcement officers who failed to exercise their responsibilities during a lynching incident. Two African American anti-lynching activists worked with President Roosevelt to help with his running for President.  They all hoped to enforce lynching laws and eliminate it all together. In 1935 attempts were made to persuade Roosevelt to support the Costigan-Wagner bill.  This bill received a lot of attention and approval by congress but the southerners eventually defeated it.  Thou this bill was not passed it did good by brining a lot of attention to the effects of lynching and why it should be stopped.
